Message :More pics? Is wear across entire meshing face width? Any pitting?

Some teeth are only worn across half the width. Some galling has occured, but no pitting. It is odd that the wear is only on the counter gear.
:What sort of driving did you do for those 5k miles?

Most of it was commuting back and forth to work. Naturally, it was "spirited" driving. There was one track event

:Which gear oil was used/ how long for each? Oil analysis?

This was the factory gear oil. It wasn't switched to synthetic because of the "break-in" oil myth. The transmission has max 5k miles on it. No oil analysis was done

:I would start by checking shaft(bearing) play and backlash/crossmesh between meshing gears. Noise could be transmission error.

Please elaborate on checking backlash/crossmesh? I can follow the inspection procedure in the FSM. Bearings don't seem to have any excessive slop in them, but I'll check them. This seems to be a common issue with the 98 spec transmissions, no matter what type of lube is used. What do you mean by "transmission error"?

:Curious on what you get quoted for WPC vs. Something proven for gears such as superfinishing.

By superfinishing do you mean a process such as cryo-rem?

Thanks for any help you can provide. I'd like to get to root cause on this.

I'll get better pics tonight. All of the wear seems to be on the counter gear, which makes me think it may be a metallurgical problem with that part...otherwise I'd expect to see the unusual wear on the mating gears as well.
